What Is It?

Orgel’s Rule, most often quoted as “evolution is cleverer than you are,” holds that trial-and-error processes running over long stretches of time routinely produce solutions more ingenious than anything a centralized, intelligent designer would think to plan. The rule doesn’t claim evolution itself is intelligent or purposeful, only that its accumulated products often out-perform deliberate design.

The rule is attributed to molecular biologist Leslie Orgel, credited to him by his colleague Francis Crick, and is typically invoked as a rejoinder to arguments that dismiss a biological (or organizational) feature simply because no one can immediately see what purpose it serves.

Why Does It Matter?

Organizations that have been running for years, through mergers, leadership changes, and improvised fixes, have effectively been through their own version of trial and error. Workarounds that survived multiple reorganizations, informal habits that outlasted the process that was supposed to replace them, and shadow systems that keep getting rebuilt after every attempt to shut them down are usually there because they solved something, even if the current leadership can’t immediately articulate what.

A new leader who assumes an inherited practice must be a leftover inefficiency, simply because it wasn’t part of any deliberate plan, is often underestimating what years of unplanned adaptation have already figured out.

What Changes Once You See It?

You stop assuming that anything undesigned must be accidental or wasteful.

You start treating a long-surviving informal practice as a hypothesis worth testing, rather than an obvious inefficiency to eliminate on sight.

You start asking what problem the evolved solution might already be solving, before replacing it with something designed from scratch.

Common Misunderstandings

  • It is not a claim that evolution, or organizational adaptation, is guided by intelligence or foresight. The cleverness is in the result, not in any planning behind it.
  • It doesn’t mean every long-surviving practice is good. Plenty of persistent habits are simply inertia; the rule is a caution against assuming otherwise by default, not a guarantee.
  • It is not an argument against deliberate design altogether. It’s a caution against dismissing evolved solutions purely because no one designed them.
  • It doesn’t apply only to biology. Crick and Orgel’s original context was molecular biology, but the same caution generalizes to any system that has adapted over time without central planning.
